Course Highlights

This course is designed for graduates from a four-year Engineering undergraduate degree not accredited by Engineers Australia in a related discipline.

The course is not suitable for graduates of a four-year undergraduate degree, with Engineers Australia accreditation in the same discipline. Those holding an EA accredited qualification and seeking a masters level qualification in the same discipline are encouraged to consider applying for entry to the Master of Philosophy or Master of Engineering Management.

Applicants seeking entry who do not hold a four year Engineering degree are required to first complete the one-year Graduate Diploma in Professional Engineering.

This major equips future metallurgical and process engineers with concepts and process applications relevant to precious, critical and base metal extraction, separation and refining from primary and secondary resources.

You will learn about techniques and emerging technologies in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. Students will be exposed to a full scope of minerals and metals processing including mineralogy, process selection, plant design, resources recycling, and environmental management along with aspects of project assessment and mineral economics.

Comprehensive understanding of metallurgical processes is critical to optimize resources extraction, particularly from low-grade and complex ores. Practical laboratory-based learning will allow you to gain exposure to various stages involved in processing minerals and extracting value from different sources. During the course, you will participate in engineering professional practice via Work Integrated Learning and site-based case studies.

In your research project, you will have the opportunity to apply advanced knowledge and technologies to solve key industry challenges, often linked to operations in the region.

Learning Structure

  • Fluently apply integrated metallurgy knowledge, tools and techniques for the design and development of engineering solutions for processing various ores, involving both physical and chemical methods, GC1.
  • Drive innovative solutions to tackle complex engineering challenges that lead to the design, development and implementation of physical and chemical processing of various ores, GC2.
  • Incorporate cultural awareness, including that of local First Peoples, as well as ethical, societal and environmental concerns in engineering management of projects where physical and chemical processing of various ores occurs, GC4, GC5.
  • Develop and document engineering prototypes, solutions and specifications to address issues of national and international significance in the context of physical and chemical processing of various ores, GC2, GC4.
  • Communicate effective and innovative engineering solutions developed by engineering teams in response to complex problems using an adaptive approach to technologies specific to physical and chemical processing of various ores, GC3, GC6.
  • Develop and maintain professional networks and work ethically and responsibly to progress the career as a professional engineer during processing of various ores, GC6.

Entry Requirements

  • A 4-year Engineering degree in same discipline.
  • Students who have completed the Graduate Diploma in Professional Engineering degree at Curtin will be considered to have met the above course requirement.

Study Gaps

For applicants with an academic or professional gap of up to 5 years, admission is generally considered acceptable. If the gap exceeds this period, applications may still be successful but will typically be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

To strengthen your profile, it is important to:

  • Provide a clear explanation of how you spent the gap period (e.g., employment, further learning, personal responsibilities).
  • Emphasize the skills and experiences you developed during this time that are relevant to the program.
  • Demonstrate that your academic qualifications continue to meet the course entry requirements.
