Course Highlights

This course is designed for graduates from a four-year Engineering undergraduate degree not accredited by Engineers Australia in a related discipline.

The course is not suitable for graduates of a four-year undergraduate degree, with Engineers Australia accreditation in the same discipline. Those holding an EA accredited qualification and seeking a masters level qualification in the same discipline are encouraged to consider applying for entry to the Master of Philosophy or Master of Engineering Management.

Applicants seeking entry who do not hold a four year Engineering degree are required to first complete the one-year Graduate Diploma in Professional Engineering.

Rapid advances in electronic communication, the ‘internet of things’, and renewable energy technologies offer abundant career opportunities in embedded systems engineering.

Our world is characterised by the ever-increasing number of intelligent devices that have embedded computers. Embedded systems are computers with specialised input or output devices that may or may not be programmed by the end user.

In this major, you will study intermediate and advanced topics in embedded systems, such as embedded systems in field-programmable gate arrays and embedded software engineering.

During the course, you will gain at least 12 weeks of exposure to engineering professional practice and keep a formal log book to record your experience. During your final-year project, you will further investigate and apply emergent technologies in embedded systems.

Learning Structure

  • Fluently apply integrated embedded systems engineering knowledge, tools, and techniques for the design, development, and deployment of embedded hardware and software in modern systems, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and scalability, GC1.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for innovation in embedded systems engineering such as IoT, AI integration, edge computing, and cyber-physical systems to improve system performance, functionality and user experience, GC2.
  • Integrate ethical, societal and environmental concerns into the planning and implementation of embedded technologies, especially those with impacts on privacy, autonomy, sustainability and inclusion, GC4, GC5.
  • Develop and document embedded hardware/software solutions that meet performance, safety and regulatory standards across global industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, energy and smart infrastructure, GC2, GC4.
  • Communicate engineering decisions, system behaviours and development processes clearly within multidisciplinary teams using modern collaborative platforms, documentation standards and technical communication skills, GC3, GC6.
  • Develop and maintain professional networks and demonstrate ethical and responsible conduct to support career progression as an embedded systems engineer across diverse industry sectors, GC6.

Entry Requirements

  • A 4-year Engineering degree in same discipline.
  • Students who have completed the Graduate Diploma in Professional Engineering degree at Curtin will be considered to have met the above course requirement.

Study Gaps

For applicants with an academic or professional gap of up to 5 years, admission is generally considered acceptable. If the gap exceeds this period, applications may still be successful but will typically be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

To strengthen your profile, it is important to:

  • Provide a clear explanation of how you spent the gap period (e.g., employment, further learning, personal responsibilities).
  • Emphasize the skills and experiences you developed during this time that are relevant to the program.
  • Demonstrate that your academic qualifications continue to meet the course entry requirements.
