Course Highlights

This course is designed for graduates from a four-year Engineering undergraduate degree not accredited by Engineers Australia in a related discipline.

The course is not suitable for graduates of a four-year undergraduate degree, with Engineers Australia accreditation in the same discipline. Those holding an EA accredited qualification and seeking a masters level qualification in the same discipline are encouraged to consider applying for entry to the Master of Philosophy or Master of Engineering Management.

Applicants seeking entry who do not hold a four year Engineering degree are required to first complete the one-year Graduate Diploma in Professional Engineering.

This major provides you with extensive theoretical, laboratory, design and research experience. You will learn about technological advances in automation and control, and management of big data in resources, energy and chemical process industries. Environmental sustainability is also a focus.

During the course, you will gain at least 12 weeks of exposure to engineering professional practice and keep a formal log book to record your experience. In your final year, you will complete a major research project that will draw upon and integrate the knowledge and skills you attained through the course.

Most research projects are based on the supervisor's research area, but some are industry projects, usually as a follow-up from your engineering vacation work. Some projects may be selected for publication in academic journals or conference proceedings.

Learning Structure

  • Fluently apply integrated chemical engineering disciplinary knowledge, tools and techniques for the design and optimisation of chemical processes, transformation, transport and production of chemicals, materials and energy, GC1.
  • Engage in opportunities for the development and implementation of innovative chemical engineering solutions to industry problems of environmental and societal significance across diverse industry sectors, including fuels and energy, minerals, chemicals, water and food, GC2.
  • Incorporate cultural awareness, including that of local First Peoples, in engineering management of chemical engineering projects in an ethical, business and climate responsible manner, GC4, GC5.
  • Develop and document engineering prototypes, solutions and specifications for industrial, fundamental and applied design and research challenges in chemical engineering addressing issues of local, national and international relevance, GC2, GC4.
  • Communicate effective and innovative chemical engineering solutions developed by engineering teams in response to complex practical problems using current and emerging technologies, GC3, GC6.
  • Develop and maintain professional networks and work ethically and responsibly to progress their career as a chemical engineer across diverse industry sectors, GC6.

To strengthen your profile, it is important to:

  • Provide a clear explanation of how you spent the gap period (e.g., employment, further learning, personal responsibilities).
  • Emphasize the skills and experiences you developed during this time that are relevant to the program.
  • Demonstrate that your academic qualifications continue to meet the course entry requirements.
