Course Highlights

This is an ideal postgraduate degree for professionals who want to specialise or upskill in a particular area of commerce. Business professionals may also be eligible to gain credit for recognised learning (CRL) and gain their master degree in just one year.

This course incorporates Curtin Business School's future-focused "GRIT" concepts- global, responsible, innovative and technology-driven; which reflects the skills the World Economic Forum has identified as non-negotiable for the 21st century.

You will study commerce subjects that will broadly enhance your employability, including business project management, business analytics and data visualisation, and transformative technologies that impact society and its business practices. These core units will extend your knowledge in areas of business and STEM and enable you to network with a wider range of peers.

Worldwide, governments are transitioning many areas of their economies to dramatically reduce their carbon emissions; which is, in turn, increasing industry demand for expertise in transforming business operations to align with ethical, sustainability principles.

This course offers an excellent qualification for business professionals looking to empower their career with the ability to drive sustainable business practices, and career-changers who want to enter the business world with skill sets in sustainable-business leadership, to make a positive impact across diverse industries.

You will learn to evaluate and synthesise knowledge on global change and sustainability, with a leadership perspective on societal, environmental and economic considerations that impact business operations. You'll also build the leadership skills that are essential for influencing and leading change processes; and fostering positive outcomes in support of sustainability principles.

The course also includes transformative experiences involving industry engagement and practice-based education, study tours and executive education programs. (Note that you can adjust your course plan to include an internship.)

The comprehensive expertise you will gain is highly relevant to diverse global industries and sectors; including manufacturing, resources and energy, retail, finance, technology, education, healthcare, government and non-profit.

Sustainable Business Leadership is one of seven majors in the Master of Commerce program of nested qualifications – which gives you the option of exiting the course with a Graduate Certificate in Business Fundamentals or a Graduate Diploma in Commerce, upon completing the units required for those qualifications.

Learning Structure

• Assess, analyse, and synthesise knowledge on global change and sustainability, recognising the interconnectedness of society, the economy, and the environment with a leadership perspective, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC5.
• Critically analyse corporate sustainability, governance, and reporting issues, leveraging leadership qualities and employing creative and innovative thinking to explore and address broader perspectives, GC2, GC4, GC5, GC6.
• Reflect and participate constructively in ethical decision making consistent with sustainability principles, GC1, GC5, GC6.
• Apply advanced proficiency and specialised knowledge in key sustainability management theories, concepts, and principles to conduct a rigorous critical evaluation of the global environmental, social, and economic challenges confronting businesses, GC1, GC4, GC6.
• Demonstrate advanced and integrated proficiency in utilising tools, mechanisms, and leadership skills essential for influencing and leading change processes, fostering positive environmental, economic and social outcomes in support of sustainability, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4, GC5, GC6.

• A Bachelor degree in any discipline.

Study Gaps

For applicants with an academic or professional gap of up to 5 years, admission is generally considered acceptable. If the gap exceeds this period, applications may still be successful but will typically be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
