The MRes in History offers you an excellent opportunity to extend your range and depth of historical knowledge alongside your proficiency in research and project management. The course is an ideal academic undertaking in preparation for a PhD in History, as well as a valuable qualification for those pursuing a wide range of careers. Advanced research skills acquired by MRes students are sought after in a range of sectors, from finance to academia, and teaching to the civil service.

This course provides a thorough grounding in current historical research theories and methods. The learning culminated in the completion of a 28,000-word research dissertation. As the focus of the MRes is on independent research, you can craft a course that is unique to you and exactly matches your interests.

Learning Structure

Teaching

• At the heart of the MRes is an extended Research Dissertation which you are free to design around your own historical interests and the Department's research specialisms.
• To help you develop your project, the course provides a thorough grounding in the methodologies and advanced skills needed to pursue a sustained research project.

Assessment

• Assessments include essays, literature reviews and oral presentations.

Entry Requirements

• 4-year Bachelor's degree in Archaeology or any relevant discipline with CGPA 3.00 or 65% of marks (or above) from recognised institution.

  CGPA 2.75 is acceptable of the following universities:

  3. Independent University Bangladesh (IUB)
  4. American International University Bangladesh (AIUB)
  5. Asian University for Women (AUW)
  6. Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP)
• A 2:1 or above honours degree in Archaeology or any relevant discipline.
• Applicants will be required to produce up to 300 words describing their research topic and attend an interview.
• Consideration will be given to those who hold a lower classification who can demonstrate they are capable of performing at the level required to complete the course successfully.

Study Gaps

For applicants with an academic or professional gap of up to 5 years, admission is generally considered acceptable. If the gap exceeds this period, applications may still be successful but will typically be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

To strengthen your profile, it is important to:

• Provide a clear explanation of how you spent the gap period (e.g., employment, further learning, personal responsibilities).
• Emphasize the skills and experiences you developed during this time that are relevant to the program.
• Demonstrate that your academic qualifications continue to meet the course entry requirements.
